Active Noise Canceling (ANC) is a technique that is increasingly used in many
examples of engineering practice. ANC systems are based on the destructive interference
of the waves, i.e. on the fact that two waves of the same amplitude and opposite phase
cancel each other. In ANC system the adaptive algorithms are used, with aim to model
the canceling signal on the basis of knowledge of the disturbance source. Filtered-x LMS
algorithm (FxLMS) is one of the mostly used algorithms in ANC systems. Performances
of any adaptive algorithm are evaluated by using three main criteria: the convergence
speed, the steady state error and the algorithm computational complexity.
The subject of this thesis is the development of new algorithm for ANC systems that
will exhibits better performances compared to the existing ones. The study was based on
the analysis of existing adaptive algorithms, applying the presented methodology for
noise whitening and system identification, with detailed analysis and performing
numerous simulations using Monte Carlo method. As a result of the research, the Coupled
LMS (CLMS) algorithm is proposed, an original solution for the adaptation of ANC
system, which exhibits better performance compared to the FxLMS algorithm and its
modifications. The CLMS algorithm consists of two adaptive filters. The first adaptive
filter is used to identify the primary acoustic path. The coefficients of the second adaptive
filter are updated by using the coefficients of the first filter, with the aim to minimize the
system output error. In the thesis it is shown that CLMS algorithm converges faster and
achieves smaller steady state error, as compared to most commonly used algorithms in
ANC systems.
In order to reduce the computational complexity, implementation of the CLMS
algorithm in the frequency domain is proposed. Reducing computational complexity is
achieved by using the Fourier transform for the effective execution of the algorithm
routines, which reduces the computational complexity to the order which is comparable
with the complexity of the FxLMS and its modifications in the frequency domain.
Simulation results confirm the superiority of the proposed algorithm compared to the
algorithms discussed in this thesis.
